Technology to save our koalas

12 donors have given to Technology to save our koalas, raising $762.

With many of our native wildlife becoming extinct at alarming rates, QUT researchers have developed a leading-edge technique for detecting koalas using drones that identify heat signatures from above. This method is faster and more accurate than traditional ground searches. Our researchers have created an algorithm to identify koalas’ heat signatures and are working to extend their algorithm to also detect other animal species.

Using drones and artificial intelligence, the team at QUT has developed a method that is up to 100% accurate in finding koalas at our primary bushland test site.

But we need to ramp up these efforts to reach more koala inhabited places in Australia. We need to do everything possible to save them.

Your gift will help:

  • Enable detection, analysis and mapping of koalas from drone data in bushfire affected areas
  • Develop an algorithm to increase the number of detectable species
  • Improve automated detection of animal species across large areas to assist with planning and recovery efforts
  • Support drone surveys in partnership with national wildlife protection organisations
  • Improve wildlife populations and the sustainability of large areas of wilderness

The real-world impact of your gift:

Imagine if during the country’s most devastating bushfires, we’re able to harness innovative technology to stop the extinction of our native wildlife.

Your gift will help improve monitoring to assist with wildlife recovery and inform effective conservation decisions.

  • If 600 people give just $50, researchers could buy a new drone with longer battery life and sensor to survey more land and save more wildlife after bushfires
  • Your gift of $100 will enable one hour of expert support for algorithm development to increase the number of species able to be detected by drone/AI systems
